Jersey Devil Game Model

Unreal Engine 5.6 Renders

My interpretation of the Jersey Devil, a cryptid said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, my home state. It’s described as having the head of a goat, bat-like wings, a forked tail, the legs of a horse, and tiny, clawed arms.

Turnaround

Tris without fur cards: 26,566 | Total tris: 175,808

The detailed model was sculpted in ZBrush and retopologized in TopoGun 3. Maya was used for UVs, Substance Painter and Designer for texturing, with the final renders done in Unreal Engine 5.6.

UV and Textures

Body

Base color and scattering maps were unpacked here for better visibility.

Fur Cards

The fur card geometry was made in Zbrush using a FiberMesh workflow. The color of the fur was made by PolyPainting the cards in Zbrush and setting up the Unreal material to multiply the vertex color data with the base color map.

Eyes

The eyeball geometry and materials used are from the MetaHumans sample project, with custom iris textures made in Substance Designer. Additional geometry for the shadows and tear ducts were made.
